Naina (Deepika Padukone) is a bespectacled and shy medical student. She studies constantly and always tops her classes. An encounter with an old classmate, Aditi (Kalki Koechlin), makes her realise that she wants more from life than high marks. She makes an impulsive decision to follow Aditi on a commercial trip into the Himalayas, up to Manali. On the trip, she renews her friendship with another former classmate, Kabir "Bunny" Thapar (Ranbir Kapoor). Bunny is a handsome charmer whose dream is to travel the world. He does not plan to marry or settle down.

In the course of the trip, Bunny and Naina draw closer to each other. Bunny teaches Naina to laugh, to play, and to love. At the end of the trip, she is close to telling Bunny how she feels, but is interrupted by their friend Avi (Aditya Roy Kapur). He has searched Bunny's backpack and found a letter accepting Bunny to graduate school in journalism, at Northwestern University. Bunny explains that the trip is his last fling before he leaves. He will be sad to leave his friends, but happy to start a career that will lead to the travel of which he dreams. After violating the Prime Directive of non-interference in the development of primitive cultures, Captain James T. Kirk loses command of the USS Enterprise. With a misalignment of the heads of the warp core resulting in the Enterprise being powerless, Kirk elects to enter the radioactive engine chamber and re-aligns the heads in time for the ship to prevent its destruction. One year later, Kirk addresses a gathering memorializing the events, reciting the "where no-one has gone before" monologue. Khan is resealed in his cryogenic pod and stored away with his crew.
