In June 2011, Yash Raj Films released a statement announcing a new directorial venture by Yash Chopra, which would coincide with the 50th anniversary of his career in Bollywood. He also stated that the film was untitled as of that time, similar to his previous film Veer-Zaara which was named on the day of its submission to the Central Board of Film Certification. The producers had considered a variety of options but were reportedly not satisfied. Yash Chopra had later "nearly finalized" the title Jai, but retracted it afterwards.
