2016: Obama's America is a 2012 documentary by conservative author and commentator Dinesh D'Souza. The film was produced by Gerald R. Molen. D'Souza and John Sullivan co-directed and co-wrote the film, which is based on D'Souza's book The Roots of Obama's Rage (2010). Through interviews and reenactments, the film compares the similarities of the lives of D'Souza and President Barack Obama
as D'Souza presents his theory of how early influences on Obama are
affecting the decisions he makes as president. Reviewers praised the
quality of the film's production, but doubted its ability to change any viewer's mind about Obama's policies.

The movie 2016: Obama's America just did something that's
hard for any political documentary to accomplish: it took seventh place
on the list of this weekend's highest grossing movies. Usually, when any
documentary pulls in more than five million dollars, it's about, say,
Katy Perry. But 2016 looks at the ideologies and global
movements that it says helped intellectually mold the President of the
United States from a critical, conservative perspective. And the ending
imagines an America economically undone by four more years of an Obama
presidency.During the three years
writer Dinesh D'Souza worked on the documentary, he traveled to Kenya to
interview George Obama, the president's half-brother, as well as to
India to create something of a parallel between his story and Obama's.
The attention the film's received from Rush Limbaugh and Fox News has
helped it expand from one screen in Houston when it opened six weeks ago
to over 1170 screens nationwide, says producer Gerald Molen. The documentary begins with D'Souza on screen describing his own experiences as an Indian-American immigrating to the United States, as a college student at Dartmouth College, and then as an editor at the conservative magazine Policy Review,
pointing out the similarities between his life and Barack Obama's. The
film changes location to Indonesia, where a young Barack Obama is being
reared by his mother Ann Dunham and stepfather Lolo Soetoro.
A psychologist discusses the detrimental effect of an absentee father
on his children. D'Souza travels to Africa and interviews Obama's half
brother George Obama.
