Total Recall is a 2012 American science fiction action film, based on the 1990 film of the same name and by extension the 1966 short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick. Unlike the original film, the plot for the 2012 film lacks a trip to Mars and contains strongpolitical overtones. In addition, the film also blends Western and Eastern influences together, due to the fact that the two nation states, New Shanghai and Euroamerica, are battling for political power.

In a futuristic setting of 2084, after being devastated by World War III, Earth is divided into two superpowers, FBR (Federation of the British Republic) and New Shanghai (formerly Asia), who are locked in a battle for supremacy to unify the world. In this world lives Doug Quaid (Colin Farrell), a factory worker suffering from violent nightmares. Dissatisfied with lowly existence, Quaid visits Rekall, a corporation that provides its clients with implanted artificial memories of the lives they would like to have. McClane (John Cho), a Rekall representative, finds that Quaid has already had his memory erased and demands to know why Quaid has come to Rekall. When you think about the original 1990 film (directed by Paul Verhoeven), you probably think about Mars, Arnold Schwarzenegger running and screaming, the woman with three breasts and strange extraterrestrial creatures. You can forget about most of that in the 2012 remake of Total Recall, because this film is grounded in futuristic reality, minus a lot of the alien-esque aspects. That's not to say it's void of imagination and cool concepts -- they're there, all right -- but new director Len Wiseman didn't want to retread old ground.
